The Power of Taking Notes

Updated: Jan 8

How could you tell if you should skip the next class because the lecturer is dull or the slides are whispering to put you into asleep?

The truth is no lecture or course materials are tedious or worth skipping. The problem most students run into is the clarity of the materials that the lecturer typically does not begin class with establishing a connection with students.

There are several techniques that students can follow to fill the void of not knowing how to cope up with a boring lecture by merely taking better and more effective notes.

Everybody has its way of doing things; below are three techniques that are highly recommended from professionals and researchers in the industry:

The Cornell Method:

One of the most popular methods that been widely used for many years in modern-day. The Cornell method is broken down into five steps:

1. Record: During the lecture, write all meaningful information legibly. If the lecturer is going too fast, write down hints that could refer to that piece of information that you can retrieve it.

2. Reduce: After the lecture, write a summary of the ideas and facts using keywords as cue words.

3. Recite: To study appropriately, you must recite all the information in your own words without looking at other notes or the text.

4. Reflect: Think about your own opinions and ideas as you read over your notes. Raise questions, then try to answer them creatively. Record original ideas in your notebook and review them regularly. Use your creative ideas when answering exam questions, in classroom discussions, and when writing papers.

5. Review: Before reading or studying new material, take ten minutes to review your older notes quickly. Skim over the main ideas and details. Review enhances your retention of old material while adding new material to your memory.

The Mapping Method

This method is mainly used when content is too large and condensed and needs to be broken down into more absorbable and comprehendible information. The most significant advantage of the mapping method is drawing the bigger picture while still understanding the small pieces.

The Outlining Method

The Outlining note-taking method uses headings and bullet points to organize topics. This method is most useful when learning about topics that include a lot of detail. This method is recommended to break down a whole chapter that requires more memorization and less jumping between concepts.

We hope these techniques are going to make your next lecture sway! And remember that vRealm Tutors can help out at any subject, anytime.
